3-tab shingles are a single layer with cutouts that create the appearance of three separate shingles — a flat, uniform look that was the standard through the 1990s. Architectural (dimensional or laminate) shingles are multi-layer, heavier, and have a textured, three-dimensional profile that better mimics slate or wood shake. Architectural shingles last 25–30 years vs. 15–20 for 3-tab, carry better wind and impact ratings, and look significantly better. For the modest cost difference, we no longer recommend 3-tab for residential installations — architectural is the appropriate baseline.

For most DuPage County homeowners, yes — and the math is usually clear. The Class 4 upgrade adds approximately $1,500–$2,500 to a typical Naperville installation. Most Illinois insurance carriers offer 20–30% premium reductions for Class 4 certification. On a $2,400/yr homeowners policy, that's $480–$720/yr in savings — meaning the upgrade pays for itself in 3–5 years, after which you're saving money every year. Additionally, Class 4 shingles survive hail events that would require insurance claims on standard architectural shingles — avoiding deductibles and potential non-renewal risk. Our team runs the numbers for your specific policy before you decide.

Our team brings physical shingle samples to every on-site visit — viewing a 2-inch square in a brochure is not the same as seeing a full-sized sample against your siding and trim in natural light. As a general principle: homes with warm-toned siding (beige, cream, tan, brown brick) pair well with brown, weathered wood, and golden blend shingles. Homes with cool or neutral siding (gray, white, blue-gray) pair well with charcoal, slate, and pewter blends. For HOA communities, we provide the specific product specification required for architectural committee submission.

Illinois building code and most manufacturer warranty programs permit one overlay (installing new shingles over one existing layer). However, we don't recommend it as standard practice and typically decline to do it. The reasons: you can't inspect or repair the decking underneath, the existing layer holds heat and accelerates granule loss on the new shingles, uneven surfaces cause premature cracking, and the additional weight stresses the roof structure. More importantly, most manufacturers — including GAF — void their premium warranty tiers on overlay installations. A full tear-off adds cost but produces a significantly better long-term result. If your existing roof already has two layers, a full tear-off is code-required.

The Golden Pledge® is GAF's highest warranty tier — 50 years covering both manufacturing defects in materials and workmanship defects in the installation, fully transferable to future homeowners. The key limitation: it is only available through GAF Master Elite® certified contractors. Master Elite® is a designation held by fewer than 3% of roofing contractors in the US, requiring documented training, licensing, insurance, and quality standards. Our installation crews hold Master Elite® certification, which means we can offer Golden Pledge® on qualifying product lines. If a contractor offers GAF Golden Pledge® without being able to show their current Master Elite® certificate, that's a red flag — the warranty will not be honored.

Realistic lifespan expectations for properly installed asphalt shingles in DuPage County's climate: standard architectural shingles, 22–28 years; Class 4 impact-resistant shingles, 28–38 years. Illinois's freeze-thaw cycles, UV exposure, and hail frequency all shorten lifespan compared to milder climates — which is why Class 4 is a particularly strong value here. The biggest lifespan variable after material grade is installation quality: proper attic ventilation (inadequate ventilation degrades shingles from beneath), correct underlayment, and properly installed flashing at every penetration. A well-installed roof consistently outlasts a poorly installed one by 5–10 years regardless of shingle grade.
